PVP (Photoselective Vaporization of Prostate) utilizes a Green Light laser at high power to vaporize the unwanted prostate tissue with very minimal bleeding and very minimal post-operative pain. Patients undergoing PVP can go home the same day and expect to pass urine normally the following day. The very low risk of bleeding makes this method particularly suitable for any body taking medication to prevent clotting of blood (antiplatlets such as Aspirin, Ticlid® or Plavix®) and anticoagulants such as Warfarin.
Surgery for BPH works by removal of the unwanted benign prostate tissue which is causing obstruction to urine flow from the bladder. TURP (Transurethral Resection of Prostate) has been the most popular surgical technique to achieve this and remains very popular today. This involves slicing off pieces of obstructing prostate tissue with a cutting electrodiathermy tool. Bleeding is the main problem during and after surgery and it is customary practice to keep patients in hospital for 3-4 days for observation. Laser destruction of tissue depends on the interaction between the laser light and tissue. With our laser system, the green laser light is very efficiently absorbed by the red pigment of blood cells causing the tissue to heat up and vaporize whilst at the same time sealing the blood vessels to prevent bleeding, hence the term Photoselective Vaporization of the Prostate (PVP). The more red blood cells, the better the effect.
This technique is particularly suited to those large prostates rich in
blood vessels which are prone to brisk bleeding during conventional
TURP.
Some laser treatment produces a layer of dead tissue which remains
adherent and patients are unable to pass urine properly until this
tissue sloughs off. With the LaserScope® GreenLightTM Laser System,
obstructing prostate tissue can be instantaneously removed with minimal
bleeding allowing almost all patients to pass urine normally within 24
hours. The very low risk of bleeding makes this method particularly
suitable for anybody who are more prone to bleeding, especially those
taking medication to prevent clotting of blood (antiplatlets such as
Aspirin, Ticlid® or Plavix® and anticoagulants such as Warfarin).
